Star batsman Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma said on Monday that his disciple has set an example by saying goodbye to Test cricket at the peak of his career. Kohli on Monday announced his retirement from the traditional format of the game in which he scored 9230 runs in 123 Test matches at an average of 46.85 with the help of 30 centuries. He will now play only in ODI cricket. He retired from T20 International last year.
Rajkumar Sharma told ‘PTI video’, “He has set an example by saying goodbye to Test cricket. We have often seen that our cricketers’ retirement is not good, but everyone would like to retire like this. He could play a lot of cricket, he has left a lot of cricket. But Virat’s’ style ‘has always been like this.”
He said, “I will talk to him, but this is his decision. I appreciate his decision. I salute his contribution to the Indian team and what he did for the country.”
Kohli has the distinction of being India’s most successful Test captain, who won the team in 40 out of 68 matches. Sharma said, “Everyone knows that when he became a captain, he changed the entire culture of the Indian team which included the culture of victory from physical fitness.
Sharma said that Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket has surprised the whole country, which has led to a flood of messages to convince this star batsman to celebrate his decision.
He said, “This is a very emotional moment for all Indians. His fans and other countrymen are asking me to convince Kohli. Thousands of requests have come to you. They listen to you. They listen to you. They still have a lot of cricket left. People love him. That’s the best thing.”
