“The first show we have ever made was in the 1970s,” said Ritu Kumar. “And now I am here passing the stick to Amrish, who won even more with layering techniques in layers and put it in a very modern collection. I am really proud.” For her, it’s time to take a break and think. “I was lucky to have made this incredible trip,” she says. “And every morning, for at least 15 minutes, I thank the fate that brought me here.”

Ahead, Ritu and Amrish Kumar Vogue India on the creation of the collection, its next book and the next step for Indian sewing.

Vogue India: Where did this collection started?

Amrish Kumar: About three years ago, I went to search Dhakai Jamdanis in Kolkata, via Weavers Studio and I met this incredible woman who does an incredible job. At the time, I did not know where it would lead. But that’s how it starts. Long before everything comes to life on the track, these are only research. You go deep in things and you start to follow rabbit holes. You might see something, or dive into a specific job or find yourself in a craft studio.
