Google again replaced ‘Gulf of Mexico’ for American users to ‘Gulf of America’

San Francisco:

Google on Monday, following the executive order of President Donald Trump, has changed the name of Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” for those using its maps platform inside the United States. Tech veteran wrote in a blog post that users outside the United States will be able to see both Gulf of Mexico and new names. Google wrote, “People using maps in America will see ‘Gulf of America’, and people in Mexico will see ‘Gulf of Mexico’. All the people will see both names.”

Google said that this change is in line with its policy of following the geographical names of the official US government through the geographical name information system. After assuming office, Trump not only signed an executive order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico, but also changed the name of America’s highest peak Denali to Mount McKinley.

In 2015, the then President Barack Obama officially recognized Alaska Mountains as Denali, which is the name used by the original inhabitants of Alaska for centuries. Trump’s name change criticized the native groups of Alaska, who have been advocating the name Denali for a long time, and have also expressed diplomatic concerns with Mexico.

Mexican President Claudia Shinbam suggested calling the United States a “Mexican America”, pointing to a map before being captured by the US in 1848.
