Ankara:

The process of big protests continues across the country to protest against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Acrem Imamoglu. According to the government, more than 1,000 people have been detained. According to media reports, internal minister Ali Yralikaya said on Monday that 1,133 people have been detained in the whole of Turkey since the protests that started five days ago against Imamoglu’s custody.

The biggest protest of more than a decade has started in Turkey after President Recep Tayap Erdogan’s main political rival Imamoglu was detained last Wednesday.

On Sunday, a court sent him to jail on charges of corruption. However, Imamoglu denied the allegations.

Demonstration continues despite the ban

Despite the ban on meetings in many cities, anti -government demonstrations continued till the fifth consecutive night till Sunday, in which thousands of people participated. The protests were mostly peaceful.

However, Yerelikaya claimed that 123 police officers have been injured during the protests so far. He said that the government will not allow ‘spreading terror on the roads’.

The Turkish journalist association said on Monday that nine journalists were among the detained people who had covered overnight protests in many cities. It is not yet clear why journalists were detained.

Erdogan refuses to be inspired by investigation politics

Imamoglu’s main opposition party Republican People’s Party (CHP) appealed to protest against the court verdict to arrest the mayor.

Imamoglu dismissed the allegations against him as ‘unimaginable’ and called for a nationwide protest.

Erdogan said last week that the government would not accept ‘disruption in public system’. His government denied that the investigation was motivated by politics and said that the courts are independent.

Protests to hide the deficiencies of opposition: Celic

Ear -Yogan’s ruling AK party spokesperson Omar Celic said on Monday that the CHP called for the protest to hide the deficiencies of the opposition.

Celik said, “Democratic opposition is a (fundamental) right, but the language of CHP is not the language of democratic opposition.”

54 -year -old Imamoglu was organized by CHP to make the presidential candidate. About 15 million votes were cast in support of the mayor.

The supporters of the mayor said on Monday that putting Imamoglu in jail reflects the lack of justice in Türkiye.
