Are kojic acid and vitamin C the power couple we’ve been ignoring?

I love a good skin care cocktail. Salicylic acid and niacinamide do wonders when my skin is oily and congestioned. Vitamin C and retinol have a back when I need a lightening boost. And for days when my skin does not feel like herself? Ceramids and hyaluronic acid intervene to nourish, soothe and strengthen it.

The superposition of good ingredients allows them to work in synergy, improving the effectiveness of your global routine. An underestimated power duo? Kojic acid and vitamin C.

What makes them instantly compatible? And why are they couple of couple of power in the world of skin care? Experts break it down.

Meet kojic acid

This skin care ingredient initially gained popularity in Japan in the 80s and 90s, thanks to its skin fighting properties. “Kojic acid works by inhibiting the production of tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the formation of melanin,” said Dr. Batul Patel, medical director of the Bombay Skin Clinic.

This essentially means that it slows melanin production, which makes it very effective in reducing hyperpigmentation, dark spots and melasma. The active ingredient also has slight exfoliating, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, which makes it a desired addition to improve the clarity and the sparkle of the skin.

Meet vitamin C

Regarding antioxidants, vitamin C reign. In addition to protecting the skin from environmental stressors, it is one of the best ingredients for overall skin health. Dr. Niketa Sonavane, a famous dermatologist and founder of Aesthetics Aesthetics, explains: “It stimulates collagen, keeps the skin firm and young, protects against sun damage and pollution, illuminates, evokes complexion and accelerates healing, which also helps acne scars.”

While vitamin C is a favorite for skin care, Dr. Nidhi Singh Tandon, founder and chief medical director of the skin art clinic, warns that L-Ascorbic acid (its most active form) can be irritating to higher concentrations (15-20%), especially for those who have sensitive skin.

Dynamic duo

When associated, kojic acid and vitamin C improves the clarification effects of others, the evening complexion when fighting hyperpigmentation.

Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals and stimulates the production of collagen, while kojic acid inhibits melanin at its source.

Dr. Tandon explains: “The two inhibit melanin at different stages, making it a power torque to fight pigmentation.” Their antioxidant properties also help to prevent other damage because of exposure to UVs and pollution. The result? Reduced dark spots, improved skin texture and radiant glow. Dr. Sonavane reaffirms their dynamic duo status, raising “the effects of the other without irritating the skin – when used correctly”.

A guide for beginners

If you are new in this twinning, start slowly. Experts recommend using vitamin C in the morning and kojic acid at night every two days.
