Bone Cancer Detection & Diagnosis in Minutes | Just a drop of blood and reports in minutes! IIT-BHU scientists made miraculous devices, bone cancer will now be tested on the spot

New Delhi: The technology is now bringing revolution in the early identity of cancer. IIT-BHU is leading it. Scientists here have developed a device that can do the exact check of bone cancer with only a drop of blood in a few minutes. This device can prove to be a boon, especially for rural areas, where modern lab facilities are far from access.

This device, led by Dr. Pranjal Chandra, Professor of IIT-BHU’s School of Biochemical Engineering, is a portable sensor, which recognizes a biomarker called Osteopantin (OPN). OPN is a major indicator associated with bone cancer (osteosarcoma), especially seen in children and adolescents.

This device does not require any chemical reagent. It recognizes OPN with the help of gold and redox-active nanomatorial. Its design is so simple and strong that it can be easily used in any rural clinic or health center. Its functioning is exactly like glucose meter, that is, take a drop of blood and get a report in minutes.

Why is this device special?

Fast and accurate: This device gives much faster results than traditional investigation methods.

Cheap and portable: This device prepared at low cost can be easily moved from one place to another.

Without chemical: There is no need for any kind of expensive testing chemicals.

Investigation on the spot: There is no need to refer the patient somewhere or wait for the report. The investigation is done right there.

Boon for rural India

In a country like India, where even today large population lives in villages and primary health facilities are very limited, the initial identity of serious diseases like cancer is very difficult. This device can work to fill that gap. Now in rural areas, cancer can be investigated with the same accuracy as in a big hospital.

What did the director say?

IIT-BHU director Prof. Amit Patra described this innovation as the best example of “science for the common man”. He said that this discovery will not only contribute to the medical field but it will also strengthen government campaigns like ‘Make in India’ and ‘Startup India’.

Application has been made for the patent of the device. Also, the team of researchers is now working towards converting this sensor into a diagnostic kit connecting this sensor with a smartphone. This means that in the coming time, with the help of mobile and this device, anyone will be able to check cancer.
