Car sales in India in FY 2025 crossed 41 lakh units, Maruti Suzuki leads

According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (Fada), during the financial year ended March 31, 2025, the number of new cars registered on the government’s vehicle portal increased to a record 41,53,432 units. It has shown an increase of 4.87 percent as compared to last year.

Maruti Suzuki India was at the forefront of the market with 40 percent market share, while Hyundai Motor India got stuck in strict competition for the second place with domestic Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra Limited.

Two -wheelers’ sales increased by 7.71% on an annual basis

According to the data, both Indian car manufacturers also registered their strong positions in the electric car segment. During 2024-25, two-wheelers recorded an increase of 7.71 percent on an annual basis, which reached 1,88,77,812 units due to the rise in demand. The boom in economic activities increased by 4.54 percent in sales of three -wheelers compared to the previous year, but the sales of commercial vehicles remained stable.

Fada President CS Vigneshwar said in a statement, “FY 2025 actually showed how adaptable and flexible India’s auto retail area could be.” He said, “Our initial forecast for passenger vehicles proved to be almost completely correct, which was a low increase of single digits at about 5 percent. A major attraction of the year was a performance in rural areas.”

Auto dealers trouble amid increasing stress over tariffs

According to Fada, “Auto dealers across the country have some apprehensions in FY 2026, on the one hand the rapid heat warning of IMD is hovering over the movement of consumers and infrastructure activities, while on the other hand there is increasing instability in the market amidst increasing tension over tariffs globally, this is affecting the buyers of buyers.

A statement by Fada said that although the circumstances would be unfavorable, almost the surveys still expect the sales to remain stable in April. At the same time, more than a third of dealers are expected to increase some increase due to regional festivals and wedding season.
