Country will not remain silent: Protest of main opposition party in Türkiye on the arrest of Isambul Mayor

Türkiye’s main opposition Republican People’s Party organized a rally in Istanbul in support of Istanbul’s Mayor Acrem Imamoglu on Saturday. The protesters raised slogans and waved the mayor’s banners and posters. Party leader Ojgur Ojel while talking to an international media outlet and said that he has planned to hold rallies in every city in Türkiye. Also, more demonstrations will be held in Istanbul on Wednesday next week. According to media reports, the arrest of Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan’s staunch rival and a potential contender for presidential Imamoglu is seeing the biggest protests in the country after more than a decade.
Ojel later said on his social media that the country will not remain silent. He also demanded the release of Imamoglu.
Arrest of more than 1800 people
Ojel said on X on Saturday, “I want to thank all my citizens who filled the square for justice and to protect their will.
Turkish security forces have arrested more than 1800 people, including many students, journalists and lawyers, amid alleged ongoing protests.
Many serious allegations are made on Imamoguu
Meanwhile, Turkish lawyer Farhat Guzel said that at least 511 students were detained in Istanbul, many of whom were detained during the raid. Of them, 275 have been put in jail, he said that according to media reports, the actual figure is probably more.
Earlier, Turkish official Anadolu news agency said Imamoglu has been accused of obtaining illegal data illegally for bribery, corruption, fraud, illegal data for profit and tampering with tender.
Recently, thousands of people have come out on the streets across Türkiye in large -scale peaceful demonstrations against Imamoglu’s arrest.
