The governments of Spain and Portugal have called emergency cabinet meetings after this horrific power cut. Portugal’s utility Ren confirmed the power cuts in the Iberian Peninsula, which also affected a part of France, while the Spanish grid operator Red Electrics said that she was working with regional energy companies to restore electricity.

REN’s spokesperson said, “All plans for phased restoration of energy supply are being implemented in coordination with European energy producers and operators.”
“RN is in constant touch with the official institutions, ie the National Civil Protection Authority. Also, the possible causes of the incident are being assessed.”
Spanish radio stations said that the underground part of Madrid is being evacuated. Cadre Ser Radio Station reported that there was traffic jam in the center of Madrid city as traffic lights were not working.
