India increases registration fees for vehicles over 20 years old to combat pollution

The Ministry of Transport has increased the costs of recording engine vehicles over 20 years old so that people can be discouraged to keep them. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MANTH) has published a notification indicating that the renewal costs for light motor vehicles (LMV) of over 20 years have been doubled from 5,000 rupees to 10,000 rupees. According to the notification, the costs of renewing motorcycles over 20 years old will drop from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000. Renewal costs for three wheels and quadricycies will go from Rs 3,500 to 5,000 rupees.

In the case of two wheels or three imported wheels, the renewal of the registration certificate will cost 20,000 rupees, while it will be Rs 80,000 for vehicles imported with four or more wheels. The amendment project was published in February and was finalized on August 21. The ministry had increased the costs of recording and renewing motorcycles, three wheels and cars in October 2021.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ordered the authorities not to take driving against owners of diesel vehicles over 10 years and more than 15 years in Delhi-NCR. The decision occurred when the Delhi government urged the court to examine their actual use instead of its construction year while implementing the policy of ending the period of life of vehicles.
