An American judge ordered the release of Indian researcher of a top American University- Badar Khan Suri from custody on Wednesday, 14 May. He was allegedly detained for relations with Hamas and is facing possible deportation. Postdorctor Fellow Badar Khan Suri was arrested by federal agents from his house in Virginia two months ago and kept in Texas at Texas.

District Judge Petricia Giles on Wednesday ordered Suri’s immediate release and said that he should be allowed to return to his wife and three children in Virginia from Texas on a personal bond.

Suri’s wife Muffj Saleh said in a statement issued by the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), “I got tears in my eyes after hearing the judge.” The CCR is one of the groups representing Suri in the court. Saleh said, “Speaking about what is happening in Palestine is not a crime .. Let’s show the world that this country is still a place where people can express their faith without any fear.”

Judge Petricia Jiles, while ordering Suri’s release, said that his custody has violated his first amendment of freedom of expression.

CCR counsel Aastha Sharma Pokharel said, “Today’s order of the court should send a clear message to the Trump administration that he cannot arrest anyone to stand in solidarity with the Palestinians and stand against the massacre in Gaza, not separate them from their family and not put them in jail.”

Suri’s release was several days after another judge ordered the release of Rumrasa Ozork’s custody at Turkish PhD student Rumresa Ozork at Tufts University, Massachusetts.
