Khalistan, trade, poor relationship .. Will Mark Carney be able to cover the spread of Trudeau with India?

Canada Election Results 2025: Mark Carney is ready to become PM once again by winning the federal elections of Canada. The victory of the Liberal Party led by Mark Carney has raised the possibility of re-tracking its relations with India and giving him momentum in the right direction. On the pitch of politics, new player Mark Carney recently said that “I am the most useful in crisis.” If he accepts this mantra, his winnings indicate a possible improvement in bilateral relations between New Delhi and Ottawa, the relationship that deteriorated considerably during the tenure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In his election campaign, Mark Carney had recognized the re -tracking relations with India as a priority. He had said, “Canada wants to diversify its business relations with like -minded countries and there are opportunities to rebuild relations with India. There should be a shared feeling of values around that commercial relationship and if I am Prime Minister, I am waiting for an opportunity to make it.”

Relationships were touched during Trudeau’s tenure

In June 2023, a Canadian citizen and Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar were killed outside a gurdwara in the British Columbia. The TDO government alleged that the murder included “Indian agents”. After this, India-Canada relations reached their lower level.

The tension in October 2024 further increased when Canada expelled six Indian diplomats. At the same time, India denied having any kind of hand in Nijjar’s murder and described the allegations as baseless. The matter even deteriorated, both countries expelled top messengers, had to stop business talks and suspend official trips.

New Delhi has been accusing the government there of giving place to Khalistani extremists in Canada for a long time. Trudeau’s government was considered very favorable for separatist rhetoric by Indian authorities and very fast in publicly condemning India. In such an environment, the victory of Mark Carney is being closely monitored in both countries.

What is the attitude of Carney?

60 -year -old Mark Carney has led both Bank of Canada and Bank of England. He emphasized the sovereignty crisis and tariff threats coming from America in his election campaign and called for re -alive Canada’s foreign alliances.

Carney has described US President Donald Trump as a threat to Canada’s autonomy. After the victory, he said, “Donald Trump wants to break us so that America can capture us.” He has promised to diversify Canada’s trade relations, especially described India as a prominent partner.

Carney has constantly stated that Canada needs commercial partnership with shared democratic values, and India remains an essential partner, despite the recent controversies. Carney told Toronto Star in an interview in February, “Different people, different policies, different approaches to rule.”

Indian migrants factor

The Government of India has been saying for a long time that its primary concern is the protection of its sovereignty and regional integrity. The government sees the support of Khalistani elements abroad, especially as rallies, social media propagation and alleged money -raising networks, as a threat to national security. Trudeau did not show much desire to take action on Indian concerns, especially when Sikh separatists were seen vandalizing Hindu temples.

India is one of the largest sources of immigrants in Canada. The number of overseas Indians and the Indo-Cancer community is about 2.8 million as temporary workers, students or permanent residents. The population of students from India alone is more than an estimated 427,000. They play a big role in Canadian education and labor market.

During Trudeau’s tenure, the relationship at the diplomatic level deteriorated, but the migrants from India did not stop going to Canada. India expects India to maintain this pace especially for skilled professionals, technical staff and students.

Business will have to be brought on track again

A disadvantage of diplomatic quarrel was the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which was halted between Canada and India. The trade agreement was going on between the two for years but it was postponed after the ruckus on the Nijjar case. Those who are speaking, at least they suggest preparation to revive the CEPA.

In 2023, bilateral service trade was 13.49 billion CAD. Both governments had previously considered increasing cooperation in AI, Fintech, Green Energy and Higher Education. Under the leadership of Carney, these areas can gain momentum again, especially when both economies want to reduce dependence on China and America.
