Politics and protests

Currently, many people across India are protesting new laws on WAQF properties (land and buildings in Islam for religious or charitable purposes). Congressional leaders even referred the matter to the Supreme Court. These protests are becoming a big political issue and different political parties are using them to gain support.

For example, Mayawati, a leader from Uttar Pradesh, hopes to win Muslim voters who support another leader, Akhilesh Yadav. In Tamil Nadu, a famous politician named Vijay joined the protest because although Tamil Nadu is only 5% Muslim, it owns many WAQF properties and the election will be held soon!

Next year, several states with a large Muslim population, such as Assam (34%), West Bengal (27%) and Kerala (26%), will hold elections next year. Uttar Pradesh has 20% of Muslims and vote in 2027. Protesting to the WAQF bill helps politicians show that they are “pro-democracy” and can bring more voters to them.

Bihar held in November where 17% of the population is Muslim. Therefore, these protests may continue. Many opposition parties (such as RJD, Congress and the left) want to win the Muslim vote by opposing the bill. But these protests can also help the BJP, which has gained support from anti-Muslim voters in the past.

There are also troubles within the ruling Bihar Party JDU, and some leaders are considering leaving. Meanwhile, another politician, Prashant Kishor, is preparing to join the battle. With many political games happening, the coming months will be full of action!
