Salman Rushdie’s eye knife to 25 years in jail, why did Hadi attack?

Salman Rushdie News: A young man who attacked Indian-origin American-British writer Salman Rushdie has been sentenced to 25 years in jail. In August 2022, 27 -year -old Hadi Matar of New Jersey attacked Salman Rushdie several times during a program held in New York. Salman Rushdie lost one eye in this attack. In February 2025, Hadi Matar was convicted. On Friday, he was sentenced to jail for 25 years.
Salman Rushdie was attacked in August 2022
It is known that Rushdie suffered serious injuries in the attack in August 2022. His liver was damaged. One eye light went away, his hand was paralyzed. Hadi Matar was convicted in February 2025 after two weeks of hearing at the Chautaqwa County Court in Western New York.
The accused had stabbed the knife 15 times on Rushdie
In this case, Booker Award winner 77 -year -old Rushdie said during the testimony that he was on stage in the historic Chautaqwa Institution, when he saw a person running towards him. Recalling the incident, he said that he was stunned to see the eyes of the attacker, “who was black and looked very cruel.” At first he thought that he had been punched, but later realized that he was stabbed – a total of 15 times – and his eyes, cheeks, neck, chest, torso and thigh.
The attack was attacked due to disputed Noble the Satanic Verses
The attack took place more than 35 years after Rushdie’s controversial novel, ‘The Satanic Verses’ was published for the first time. It is known that this novel, inspired by the life of Prophet Muhammad, created anger among some Muslims, who considered its content as blank. After being published in 1988, this book was banned in some countries.
Due to this book, Rushdie faced many threats and was forced to hide for nine years after the Iran’s religious leader issued a fatwa.
Rushdie was told to attack Islam
In an interview given to New York Post from Jail in 2022, Hadi Matar, accused of attacking Salman Rushdie, praised Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini for calling for the death of Rushdie. He said, “I don’t think he is a very good person. He is a person who has attacked Islam.”
Accused used to work for Hizbullah too
Matar also said that only a few pages of ‘The Satanic Verses’ have been read. Born in a fairview of New Jersey, a Lebanese parents’ house, Matar has also been accused in a separate federal case for helping Hizbullah, a terrorist group in Lebanon. Hizbullah has been declared a terrorist organization by Western countries, Israel, Gulf Arabs and Arabs League.
