Sohrab Hura’s art is so universally relatable that he won a very prestigious prize for it

Earlier this year, in Frigid New York, I witnessed the Hura series Things felt but not quite expressed, Including frames of life slices in soft pastels on paper which allow it to mix and match emotions. There is humor, satire, sorrow and, sometimes, scenes that he just “Let’s be. But it is always the legends he adds, by hand, who lend the kind of ironic flavor to his art for which the generation z saliva. Seeing, for example, how the painting of a desperate boy stuck between two couples leaving is anointed “Saturday Night, 2022”. Another featuring a tiny fist stretizing between two plane seats to pick hair from a passenger colleague is entitled “Delhi in New York, every sixteen o’clock, 2023”. There is a boy on the dresser whose intimacy is compromised with a birthday cake called “The story of my life, 2023”. With Gouache, Hura’s art takes a more surreal vein. Ghosts in my sleepFor example, bears the name of the silhouette of his late grandfather who would hang on her bed bed in the house of his grandmother’s Chinsurah.
For Hura, the mixture between the lens and the paper is like “adjusting the radio through different chains.” Sometimes we could want the news, at other times, we might want to listen to music. ” His pastel paintings announce a “softer era” in his work, a practice which he found more “broken” than photography. The drawing breathes “the importance of problems in an increasingly disinfected and perfect world of images”. He needs Drawing, Hura said to me. For the moment, at least. “I live with the contradiction of needing the sweetness of pastels to manage (effects of long covids and guardians hampering his trips for his cinematographic work) and the responsibility of attending a live genocide.”
In the end, Sohrab Hura asks us that we consider his work and his more mutable role. It is a lot. Documentarist, surrealist, satirist. Designer, even. Above all, he is a critic. He is currently working on two photo books, Snow And The song of the sparrows in a hundred days of summerThe latter based on his work in Pati. He continues to make moving images on his walks in Delhi while he convinces his pulmonary damage, while drawing to stay close to the family he takes care of. Like the range of characters from his paintings, also contains multitudes.
