Trai to investigate Jio Airtel and VI’s voice and SMS-only plans

Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea (VI) recently introduced new voice and SMS only plans for users who only use handsets for calls and SMS and they don’t need internet data. These plans were initiated in response to instructions from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (commonly known as TRAI). However, Trai has now expressed concern over the affordability of these plans.
TRAI CONSÉRATION regarding the new scheme
Earlier, Trai had directed telecom operators to introduce special low-cost tariff check (STV) schemes and cheap voice and SMS-COWL options in December 2024. After this, Jio, Airtel and VI introduced new schemes, but these offers have attracted criticism due to the prices offered by telecom service providers.
TRAI announced testing of new schemes through an official post on its social media platform (Twitter), where the telecom regulator said that telecom companies have launched detailed information about them within 7 working days following the launch of these schemes. TRAI stressed that any changes in these new voucher schemes should follow its regulatory provisions.

Pricing Concerns and Possible Changes
This instruction from TRAI has also been issued so that customers can get relief from expensive recharge plans. However, the prices of this newly launched voice and SMS plan have shocked people. Given this criticism, there are speculations that the prices of these plans may be changed by TRAI’s review.
