UPI user alert: a new rule has been implemented from April 1 – Mobile number immediately, otherwise digital payment can be stopped

If you use digital payment based on UPI, this news is very important to you. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has asked banks and payment service providers to delete the UPI ID of April 1, 2024, which are linked to inactive mobile numbers. This means that if your mobile number is inactive or closed and is connected to digital payment applications like Google Pay, Paytm, Phonepe, you will not be able to use them. Let us understand why this decision was made and how it can be avoided.
According to NPCI, the inactive mobile numbers associated with UPI can become a serious threat to security. When a user takes a new mobile number without updating the number of his bank account, his old number can be reassigned. In such a situation, if a new person receives the same number and is still linked to the previous UPI account, the possibility of fraud increases. To prevent such cyber fraud, NPCI has ordered all banks and digital payment platforms from deleting these passive mobile numbers from their system. This step will ensure that only customers with active and correct mobile numbers can use UPI services.
What people will affect?
If your mobile number has been changed and you have not updated it on your bank account, you may lose access to UPI services. This change will affect the following users:
– People whose mobile number has changed, but the bank account has not been updated.
– People who closed their old number and have taken a new number but did not update the bank.
– People whose mobile number has been deactivated or any other person has been reassigned.

These users can be confronted with obstacles in UPI transactions, until they receive their bank file.
What to do to avoid this?
If you want to avoid any type of problem in UPI transactions, you should take the following precautions:
– Keep the mobile number linked to the active bank account – If your number has become inactive, then light it as soon as possible.
– Update a new mobile number on the bank account – If you have changed the number, have it updated immediately in your bank account.
– Re-registration UPI registration with the new number- If your number has changed, register on UPI applications and link the new number.
– Avoid suspicious activities – If your old mobile number is now with someone else, immediately inform your bank and have your UPI ID deactivate.
The decision to delete UPI ID from inactive mobile numbers of April 1, 2024 by NPCI is an important step to strengthen security. This will reduce the incidence of cyber-fraude and will help protect customer bank data. If you want to continue using UPI platforms like Google Pay, Phonepe, Paytm, make sure your bank has an active and updated mobile number. Otherwise, your UPI transaction can stop.
