Venice Film Festival | India’s Amparna Roy created history and won the Best Director Award at the 82nd Venice Film Festival

One of the world’s most famous film celebrations, the 82nd Venice Film Festival, concluded with the awards ceremony on Saturday, celebrating the finest actors of global filmmaking. In 2025, India’s Amparna Roy created history, but Dwayne Johnson’s film The Smashing Machine also won a major award. From August 27th to September 6th, the famous festival not only premiered the best films in the world, but also honored the best films. This year’s Venice Film Festival was very special for India. Director Anuparna Roy made history by winning the Best Director Award in the Originiti section of “Songs of Fortyon Trees.” The film tells the story of two immigrants from Mumbai, seeking the relationship and hope between loneliness and struggle.
The ceremony led to an incredible turn when the American independent film, “My Mother’s Sisters” surpassed the extremely popular “The Voice of Hind Rajab” and won the prestigious Golden Lion Award. Based on a powerful story based on the Gaza Crisis, the film received praise from the audience for 22 minutes, but missed the top prize.

“Songs of the Fort Gotton Tree” is the only Indian entry in the Orizonty section this year. It is played by Naz Sheikh and Sumi Bughel and shows the lives of two women in Mumbai. Produced by Bibbhanshu Rai, Romil Modi and Ranjan Singh, the film widely praised its story and Roy’s confident direction.
In response to her victory, Anuparna Roy dedicated her award to women all over the world, saying, “This film is a homage to all women who were once silent, ignored or underrated. This victory inspires more voices, more stories and more power beyond women and women.” The award, offered by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, moves forward towards gender representatives in international films.
The festival celebrated both experienced and emerging filmmakers, highlighting the excellence of the various stories and films. Roy’s victory exemplifies the changing scenario of global cinema, which exemplifies Indian filmmakers who want to adopt a new voice and be recognized at international forums.
