Yes, it’s scary trying to repair a friendship. It’s also incredibly rewarding

I have always had trouble maintaining or repairing a friendship. At the moment, a series of messages from my good friend Grace is seated, ignored, on WhatsApp, while waiting for the moment when I have enough “Hiergone” to answer. Which is just an excuse for laziness, really.

Then there are these friends that I would like to send a message, but I can’t – or will not. These are the drifts: people who have somehow slipped out of sight as our lives have taken different paths. They have moved away where we found ourselves overwhelmed by family commitments and work. Others, well, I really don’t know what happened. But what I know is that I am not alone – it is a side effect to age for most of us; This sad evolving while the priorities change and time is working.

There is Jill, the friend of the school who was always much cool than me and who looks like my “the one who fled”. Zara, an old work boyfriend with whom I was close until I was inexplicably. Lila, who had her babies early, at a time when my twenty -year -old fragile ego could not manage the disturbance she caused to our social life. Everything there, doing their own thing, of which I do not know anything – even if I remember when they lost their virginities and the details of their office. It’s weird.

Of course, many people are intended to play only a cameo in our lives and it’s ok. Some friendships do not end well and it is probably better to stay in the past (hello, university roommates). But there are others who still sting with regret and confusion to the ease with which we let the drift occur – or what we are worried about is disintegration at the moment, but we are too afraid to do anything on this subject.
